Ask a Villager what they did last night and there’s a good chance the answer involves a square. The town squares are the community’s living rooms: outdoor stages, restaurants and shops built around a plaza where there is free live music from 5 to 9 pm, 365 nights a year.

Here’s how an evening actually works.

The squares

  • Spanish Springs Town Square (North) — the original, Spanish-colonial style, a slightly older and mellower crowd, great for a relaxed dinner.
  • Lake Sumter Landing Market Square (Central) — the lakefront square with the lighthouse and boardwalk; the most restaurants and the biggest crowds.
  • Brownwood Paddock Square (South) — a western “cattle town” theme, big stage, lots of dancing.
  • Sawgrass Grove and Eastport (Newest) — the new entertainment districts in the south, with Sawgrass Grove built around a pond and the Ezell rec complex, and Eastport still growing.

Our dining directory lists every restaurant by square with phone numbers, price band and tags like patio and live music.

A typical evening

  1. 4:30 pm: Golf cart to the square. Cart parking is plentiful but fills by 5:30 on weekends — the closest spots go first.
  2. 5:00 pm: Music starts. Bring a folding chair; regulars set up in the same spots nightly. Many people bring a drink from home or buy one at the square.
  3. 6:00–7:00 pm: Dinner. Weekend waits at the popular waterfront spots can run 45 minutes in season; the restaurants a block off the plaza are often quicker.
  4. 8:30 pm: Ice cream, a walk on the boardwalk (Lake Sumter Landing), and home by 9:30.

What regulars know

  • Weeknights are easier than Fridays and Saturdays in winter.
  • The music is scheduled by the community and the calendar is published weekly — different bands every night, from ’60s rock to country to big band.
  • Golf-cart etiquette: pull all the way in, don’t block the crosswalks, lights on for the ride home.
  • Farmers markets: Brownwood on Saturday mornings, Spanish Springs on Mondays, and Lake Sumter Landing on Tuesdays (check the current schedule).
  • Movies: each of the three older squares has a movie theater.

Beyond the squares

Country club restaurants at the championship golf courses are open to everyone and are some of the best-value meals in the community. Neighborhood plazas off the squares hold dozens more restaurants, and Wildwood, Leesburg and Lady Lake add variety within 15 minutes by car.

Kevin’s take

Everyone has their square. Most buyers end up choosing a home based on which one they want to be a 10-minute cart ride from — which is exactly why our interactive map shows the squares alongside every village. Try dinner at all of them on your visit before you decide.
